Meet Dr Kawondera
Specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon
Welcome to my page. I am a specialist Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon with a passion for helping patients restore confidence and feel comfortable in their own bodies. Whether you come to me for an aesthetic procedure or for reconstructive care, my priority is that you feel at ease, listened to and respected.
My practice encompasses both aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery, with particular interests in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery, as well as body contouring. I also have experience in facial surgery, skin cancer reconstruction, trauma and complex soft-tissue reconstruction.
I believe that plastic surgery is both a science and an art. Every patient has different anatomy, goals and expectations, so my approach is always individualised, and it begins with listening. I aim to achieve natural, balanced and harmonious results while preserving what makes each patient unique. Patient safety, compassionate care, meticulous surgical technique and attention to detail are central to my approach.
I obtained my MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand and completed my internship at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital. I subsequently worked as a Medical Officer in General Surgery at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital before completing specialist training in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Wits. I obtained my Master of Medicine (MMed) in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and am a Fellow of the College of Plastic Surgeons of South Africa. I am fully registered as a specialist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and am a member of the Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons of Southern Africa (APRASSA).
I have also been involved in outreach initiatives with Smile Foundation and Operation Smile. These experiences strengthened my appreciation for the transformative impact of reconstructive surgery for children with cleft lips and palates.
Further pursuing my passion for breast surgery, I completed a clinical fellowship in breast reconstructive and aesthetic surgery at UZ Brussel in Belgium under the mentorship of Professor Moustapha Hamdi, a world-renowned expert in breast surgery.
I am committed to providing thoughtful, personalised care. You are welcome to ask any question, at any stage, and I will make sure you feel heard, informed and supported throughout your surgical journey.
A science and an art
Natural, balanced and harmonious results, while preserving what makes each patient unique.

Procedures
Breast surgery
Breast reduction
Removes excess breast tissue, fat and skin to reduce the size and weight of the breasts and reshape them. It is often considered for physical discomfort such as back, neck and shoulder pain, as well as for appearance.
Breast lift
Raises and reshapes sagging breasts by removing excess skin and repositioning the breast tissue and nipple. It can be combined with an implant where appropriate.
Breast augmentation
Increases breast size or improves breast shape and balance, most commonly with breast implants. Implant size, shape and position are chosen together with you, based on your anatomy and goals.
Breast reconstruction
Rebuilds the shape of the breast after mastectomy or other breast surgery, often for breast cancer. Options include implants, your own tissue, or a combination, and timing can be planned around your cancer treatment.
Implant removal
Removes breast implants, with or without the surrounding scar tissue, and may be combined with a breast lift to reshape the breast. Reasons for removal differ from patient to patient.
Male breast reduction
Treats enlarged breast tissue in men (gynaecomastia) by removing excess glandular tissue and fat, and sometimes skin, to create a flatter, more masculine chest contour.
Body contouring
Liposuction
Removes localised pockets of stubborn fat to improve body contour. It is a contouring procedure and not a treatment for weight loss.
Tummy tuck
Removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens the abdominal muscles where needed, for a smoother, firmer contour. It is often considered after pregnancy or weight loss.
Arm lift
Removes excess skin and fat from the upper arms to create smoother, firmer contours. It is often considered after significant weight loss.
Thigh lift
Removes excess skin and fat from the thighs to improve their shape and contour. It is often considered after significant weight loss.
Post weight loss surgery
Removes the loose, excess skin and tissue that can remain after major weight loss and cause discomfort, skin irritation and difficulty with clothing. Treatment is planned around the areas that concern you most.
Reconstructive surgery
Reconstruction after trauma
Repairs and restores the appearance and function of areas of the body affected by injury, including complex wounds and soft-tissue loss.
Reconstruction after cancer removal
Rebuilds tissue removed during cancer surgery, restoring shape and function using techniques such as local tissue, flaps or grafts. Planning is coordinated with the rest of your treatment team.
Skin cancer surgery
Removes skin cancers and repairs the area afterwards, aiming to clear the cancer while preserving as much function and appearance as possible.
Scar revision
Improves the appearance or function of a scar, for example one that is raised, widened, tight or uncomfortable, by revising it surgically or using other treatments. The best approach depends on the scar, and results vary.
Keloid management
Treats raised, overgrown scars (keloids) that extend beyond the original wound. Management may combine surgery with other treatments to reduce the chance of the keloid returning.
Burn surgery
Treats the effects of burn injury, including wound closure, skin grafting and later reconstruction of scars and tight areas of skin, to restore movement and function and improve appearance.
Congenital differences
Reconstructive surgery for conditions present from birth, such as cleft lip and palate and other differences of the face, hands or body, to improve function and appearance.
Facial surgery
Brow lift
Raises drooping brows and softens forehead lines, so the upper face looks more open and rested.
Blepharoplasty
Eyelid surgery that removes excess skin and, where needed, fat from the upper or lower eyelids to refresh the eyes and, in some cases, to improve vision blocked by drooping lids.
Lip lift
Shortens the distance between the nose and the upper lip to show more of the upper lip and refine its shape.
Non-surgical rejuvenation (Botox and fillers)
Botox softens expression lines by relaxing specific facial muscles, and dermal fillers restore volume and refine contours. Neither involves surgery, and results are temporary, so treatments are repeated over time.
Minor procedures
Lumps and bumps
Assessment and removal of lumps and bumps in the skin and soft tissue, such as fatty lumps (lipomas). Any new or changing lump should be checked, and removed tissue is commonly sent for laboratory examination.
Cysts
Removal of cysts, such as sebaceous or epidermoid cysts, that can become sore, infected or bothersome. Removing the whole cyst helps reduce the chance of it returning.
Mole excisions
Removal of moles, whether because a mole is changing or concerning, or because it is bothersome or you would like it removed. Removed moles are commonly sent for laboratory examination.
